APPLE: AN AFFORDABLE CONTEMPORARY AI SOLUTION FOR PRESERVING AGRICULTURAL PRODUCE

The economic costs of food loss and waste on farms and shops include the loss of income for farmers and food suppliers, as well as the costs associated with transporting, processing, and storing food that ultimately goes to waste. These costs can be significant, especially for small-scale farmers and shop owners who rely on the income from these perishable goods to support their families.

The social costs of food loss and waste on farms and shops can include increased food insecurity, as well as lost opportunities for economic development in communities that rely on agriculture goods for their livelihoods. In addition, food waste can contribute to food price volatility, which can make it more difficult for people to access affordable and nutritious food.

The environmental costs of food loss and waste are also significant. When food is wasted, all of the resources that went into producing it – including water, energy, and land – are also wasted. This can have serious implications for the environment, including increased greenhouse gas emissions, deforestation, and soil degradation.

Overall, the economic, social, and environmental costs of food loss and waste on farms and shops are significant, and reducing this waste is essential for creating a more sustainable and equitable food system.

It is with great excitement to announce the launch of our latest product, APPLE – Agriculture Produce Preservation Lifecycle Enhancement System for preserving agricultural produce in the present-day world. An energy-efficient food preservation system that reduces food waste, improves food availability and security and minimizes energy consumption and environmental impact.

HEXSOR IS BUILDING OUT ITS NEW ZEALAND PRESENCE

What a way to see out the year! Our visit to New Zealand with support from InnovateUK, has resulted in some very exciting new partnerships within New Zealand’s agriculture sector, which look certain to deliver big impacts in 2023.

In the North Island city of Hamilton, the largest agricultural event in the southern hemisphere Fieldays proved a fascinating introduction to the country’s agriculture innovation ecosystem, offering us the opportunity to meet with hundreds of farmers, growers, scientists and other stakeholders working across the agricultural supply chain, discuss their most pressing current and predicted challenges, and hear their hopes for the future of the sector.

We also had opportunity to meet to hear more about the NZ government’s Agritech Industry Transformation Plan (ITP), and its strategic aims for productivity and sustainability across the sector, and to introduce Hexsor to British High Commissioner to New Zealand and Governor of the Pitcairn Islands Iona Thomas and New Zealand Minister of Agriculture Hon. Damien O’Connor
we were able to showcase our company, and our innovative analytical and monitoring technologies, to both NZ government and to some of the biggest names in NZ agritech, identifying opportunities for future collaboration within the framework of the NZ government’s food production, security, and sustainability targets and, of course, forging some firm new friendships.

With a number of exciting new projects emerging from this visit, and with huge opportunity to grow and scale in NZ and across APAC more widely, we’re confident that this marks the beginning of a long, and potentially very fruitful, agritech journey.

eDNA-100P: REVOLUTIONARY TECHNOLOGY, BETTER SAMPLING.

How can you be certain that your water samples are telling you what you really need to know?

It’s a simple question, but one which belies the numerous challenges of ensuring that samples and sampling strategies are sound, and that strategic management decisions are grounded in fact.

The accurate measurement, mapping, and modelling of waterborne contaminants is key to protecting and preserving public health, and ensuring the sustainability of our waterside and marine economies. But marine ecosystems are enormously complex, and sample validity is at risk from a diverse mix of ever-changing environmental factors.

Add in the often excessive costs, high sample failure rates and laboratory-side delays that are a common feature of any testing regime, and the benefits of improving accuracy and efficiency at the point of sampling become clear.

With this in mind, the team at Hexsor are delighted to introduce to our innovative range of analytical solutions a new mobile sample filtration system destined to have a major impact on the future of marine and freshwater analysis: the eDNA-100P.

Compact, lightweight and simple to use, the eDNA-100P is a high-performance system designed for the robust and reliable point-of-need microfiltration and concentration of a wide range of waterborne contaminants, including eDNA/RNA and emergent chemical and biological toxins. Incorporating leading-edge filter technology, the eDNA-100P is capable of a market-leading filtration rate of 180 seconds per litre, with sample concentrations up to 100%.

This impressive filtration rate translates directly to vastly improved analyte representation, cell harvest and rare event detection, while the bespoke architecture of the eDNA-100P offers dramatic reductions in cellular lysis, and in cross-contamination between sampling events. Capable of processing hundreds of samples daily, and with extremely low operating costs, the eDNA-100P delivers greater validity, more comprehensive coverage, and greater cost and time savings compared to single-use filters and manual alternatives.

GET IN TOUCH, and learn how the eDNA-100P, and the Hexsor team, can help you achieve your sampling goals.

PLANTING THE SEEDS OF SUSTAINABILITY: A BRIGHT FUTURE FOR AGRITECH

To support a projected global population of 10 billion people, by 2050 the world will need to produce about 60% more food than it does right now.

If we are to meet this goal – and, importantly, meet it in a sustainable way – we need to rethink the ‘what’ and the ‘how’ of the food that we produce and consume. In addition to having more mouths to feed, global agriculture faces pressure from the effects of climate change, shifting demographics, and an increased stress on natural resources. With many of the world’s current agricultural ecosystems ill-equipped to respond to these challenges, there is an urgent need to shift towards the implementation of new methods and emergent technologies that deliver improved oversight, evidence-based decision making, enhanced productivity, reduced wastage, and greater ecological and environmental responsibility, across all stages of the farming cycle.

The seeds of this change, the Fourth Agricultural Revolution – or Agriculture 4.0 – are already being sown, and reductions in the cost of technologies such as remote sensing and robotics, combined with improvements in flexibility of implementation, mean that targeted innovations can be integrated into cross-scale operations relatively easily, and without breaking the bank.

It is also clear that the need to realise rapidly the benefits of these new technologies must be carefully balanced with the need to navigate the specific economic, social, and cultural barriers facing those farmers who stand to gain the most from their use. From family-run smallholdings, to large-scale commercial farming operations, the way in which innovations are deployed, and traditional practices optimised, is a key challenge.

For both larger and smaller operations, multispectral satellite imaging has emerged as a precise and reliable method to track crop health from sowing to harvest, isolate and tackle disease and infestation, forecast and maximise yields, and improve productivity and profitability. Continuous access to high frequency, high resolution imaging data offers a time- and cost-saving alternative to field inspections, allowing farmers to adjust inputs, establish benchmarks and detect problems early, supporting sustainable agriculture going forward. Hexsor’s Agrolight™ Crop Monitoring App offers these benefits and more, delivering up-to-date Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) images to our client’s smartphone or tablet via an intuitive, user-friendly interface, for plots as small as 1ha. Free access to 6 months of archival data enables tracking over the crop lifecycle, while a built-in crop database provides key information on a variety of crop types that can help current farmers diversify according to local conditions, or support new farmers taking their first steps in the industry.

As the location of the world’s largest innovation campus, Hyderabad is a city with its sights set firmly on the future. One of the fastest-growing technology hubs in the Asia-Pacific region, it is home to a growing array of international corporates and an enviable innovation ecosystem underpinned by strong academic and state support. In fact, the city has recently been selected by Google to host its largest operation outside of its US headquarters.

Chennai, with a more established innovation ecosystem and a more mature smart urban market, is home to an equally impressive portfolio of international business and engaged in a large number of flagship schemes designed to realise India’s vision for a safe and sustainable urban future.

Keen to grow in the Asia-Pacific region, our team has just returned from a five-day Innovate UK-led scoping mission to Hyderabad and Chennai designed to give UK businesses a taste of what these two cities truly have to offer.

The trip provided us the chance to engage with, and better understand the vision of, a variety of key stakeholders currently driving forward India’s smart urban infrastructural development, including those working toward new and net zero energy solutions, smart mobility, resilient utilities, sustainable water and waste management, and the circular economy. And needless to say, we were very impressed!

With the UK and India enjoying stronger economic ties over the past few years, and bilateral trade between the two countries forecast to double by 2030, it is a great time to introduce our leading-edge technologies into the Indian market. Based on the very positive reception received by our team – and our technology – from a number of potential strategic partners, and with the added confidence of new market knowledge, we are confident of adding significant value to the Indian smart tech landscape, and to that of the wider Asia-Pacific region.

Exciting times lie ahead as we start to build on our new relationships, and move forward unlocking new opportunities, so watch this space!

GREEN TECHNOLOGIES FOR SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE IN PORTUGAL

Our team recently had the privilege of attending the Eureka Global Innovation Summit (GIS) 2022, in Estoril. There we were treated to an inspiring event, which laid out Portugal’s vision for a greener, digital and healthier planet, underpinned by new transatlantic collaborations and focusing on the key areas of Tech for Green, digital transition, and strategy and policy-making.

The summit organiser, Eureka, is the world’s biggest public network for international cooperation in R&D and innovation, with a presence in over 45 countries. And, in that spirit of international cooperation, we have now entered into discussions with one of the companies to whom we were introduced at Estoril.

Food4Sustainability (F4S) CoLAB is a non-profit association exploring sustainable, climate-resilient regenerative and circular systems in food production, targeting carbon neutrality throughout the production cycle, and supporting a shift toward healthier and more efficient practices through education around consumption, and the use of innovative and accessible new technologies, including remote sensing, IoT and digitalisation, and software development and data integration.

With our experience and expertise in these key areas and an appreciation for the goals that F4S are working so hard to achieve, we were keen to develop the relationship, while F4S were quick to recognise the potential associated with introducing our technologies to their current project portfolio. In addition to deploying our range of innovative portable analysers, we are particularly excited by the opportunity to roll out our recently developed Agrolight™ crop monitoring app, which delivers up-to-date Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) images to a smartphone or tablet via an intuitive, user-friendly interface, for plots as small as 1ha, to track crop health, improve decision making and maximise yields.

It is the combination of IoT field and remote sensing data which stands to play a key role in achieving precision agriculture capable of maximising productivity and minimising loss in a resource-efficient and sustainable way. With F4S and Hexsor working together, the vision of truly sustainable global food production may be that little bit closer.

IT WAS ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL DELIVERY FOR US!

The CIIMAR – Interdisciplinary Centre of Marine and Environmental Research – is a research and advanced training institution in Porto that was one of the locations for field trials of Hexsor’s mobile filtration unit (FLT-100). In partnership with a UK-based company and researchers from The Marine Biological Association (MBA). FLT-100 was deployed 2 months ago to our client MBA for the real-time assessment of environmental DNA and toxin type, distribution and concentration, and to ensure a productive, safe, and sustainable blue food economy going forward.

The mobile filtration solution we developed for our client has been tested rigorously over the last few months. Over the next few weeks, our solution will remain in Europe while our client tests it.

“We commissioned Hexsor to produce a device that would automate a manual filtration unit that utilized hollow fibre filters as part of an EU project.  They produce our device in a timely fashion and for the most part to our specifications.  Minor alterations were made in a timely fashion and to our satisfaction.  Laboratory tests showed that the device that they produced exceeded our expectations, performing better and more efficiently than the manual version of the same filtration unit.  We look forward to bringing our device to the scientific market because we feel that this filtration unit will revolutionise environmental sampling and we are pleased that Hexsor has enabled us to fulfil this major scientific achievement.”

Once again, Hexsor Scientific has done it!

We would be happy to set up an exploratory call with you if you would like more information about our FLT-100 Mobile Filtration System.

HEXSOR TACKLES THE THREAT OF EMERGENT MARINE TOXINS

Emergent marine toxins, including Paralytic Shellfish Toxins (PSTs), Palytoxins, Ciguatoxins and Tetrodotoxins, are not currently subject to regular monitoring, or regulation, in Europe. Yet, they pose a huge economic risk to the region’s marine ecosystems, and particularly to its fisheries and aquaculture sector, which was worth more than £2bn in the UK alone in 2021.

The negative impact of emergent toxins, and toxin-producing organisms, on public health, and marine and coastal economies, is significantly increased by climate-induced ocean warming, and by the presence of chemical nutrient pollution, which make it easier for toxin-producing organisms like harmful algae and bacteria to proliferate. Where contaminated stock is taken up into local bluefood networks, these toxins can result in severe illness and, potentially, loss of life, while the irrigation of food crops with contaminated water has been shown to cause similar harms.

With repeated calls from sector agencies and stakeholders for a comprehensive assessment of emergent toxin risk, and the significant implications of contamination for economic and ecological sustainability, As part of Emertox project, Hexsor has been sub-contracted to develop a mobile filtration system and detection of microorganisms and organics in water

The accurate mapping, measurement and modelling of these biotoxic chemicals has, historically, been made difficult by excessive costs, high sample failure rates, and lab-side testing delays. Alongside a range of innovative new technologies being deployed to overcome these difficulties under the Emertox banner, Hexsor has developed a novel, mobile sample filtration system, the FLT-100 that is destined to have a significant impact on the future of marine water analysis.

The successful delivery of the first unit to client The Marine Biological Association (MBA), has generated serious excitement around the FLT-100 among other marine ecosystem stakeholders. By enabling filtration at point of need, the FLT-100 improves sample integrity, and ensures absolute accuracy when monitoring marine analytes even at extremely low concentrations. The technology is set to deliver huge cost and time savings compared with current sampling methods, enabling comprehensive real-time assessment of environmental DNA and toxin type, distribution and concentration, and ensuring a productive, safe, and sustainable blue food economy going forward.

VITAL STATISTICS FROM LSTM

Protected behind a fume hood in a Containment Level 3 laboratory at the heart of Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM), Hexsor’s sensor solution has been getting up close and personal with a host of – not very appealing – biological threats.

This, of course, is the entire purpose of our current collaboration with LSTM – to develop a sensor capable of detecting and quantifying COVID-19 in wastewater, as well as hundreds of other infectious nasties which, collectively, present some of the most significant global public health challenges.

Hexsor’s Dr Jeyan Sreekumar has been working closely on site with the LSTM team, under strict contamination protocols. Initial test data have proved promising and the impressive analytical capabilities of our sensor solution, and its ease of use, has already garnered much positive feedback.

“I’m no stranger to laboratory work, although working under biosafety protocols is certainly something different”, noted Dr Sreekumar.

“Nevertheless, the potential benefits of this work are huge, and it is a privilege to work alongside the LSTM team in developing a solution capable of protecting some of the world’s most vulnerable people against infection and illness”.
Our solution will remain with LSTM over the next few weeks to test different biological samples.

Although office tours and face-to-face introductions may be out of the question for the moment, and opportunities to network is limited, we are providing Abishek and Brian all necessary guidance and support to enable them to learn, develop and, ultimately, thrive, in-role, as they bring their already-impressive coding skills to bear on a number of exciting new projects.

PROTECTING THE HEALTH OF EUROPE’S LARGEST NATURAL HARBOUR

An area of Special Scientific Interest and part of the Dorset Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Poole Harbour is a jewel in the U.K’s ecological crown and Hexsor Scientific is among the companies shortlisted aiming to protect it for future generations.

The harbour, and the rivers which drain into it, have been negatively affected by a variety of anthropogenic activities which have reduced water quality and disturbed the delicate balance of the coastline’s constituent ecosystems. New technologies being developed by Hexsor will deliver real-time, point-of-need pollutant analysis for improved operational flexibility and more efficient environmental management

The project, a collaboration between Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole Council and Poole Harbour Commissioners, with support from Digital Catapult, has been launched to support the design and development of novel IoT solutions capable of maintaining the health of Poole’s waterscapes, both for the thousands of species which call the harbour home, and for the large number of visitors who use the site recreationally each year.

HELPING LIVERPOOL BREATHE EASY

Cold Atlantic winds mean that, today, the air pollution in Liverpool and the surrounding area is low (rated 3, out of a possible 10, on Defra’s air pollution forecast), with the result that, should I be so inclined, I could venture out of the office to enjoy a whole host of outdoor activities without any risk to my health. Last summer, however, air quality in the city had become so poor that it posed a genuine danger, particularly to those with asthma and other respiratory conditions, prompting the city council to declare a climate emergency.

Air pollution is thought to be responsible for tens of thousands of deaths annually in the UK and, in January this year, the publication of a study by researchers from the Environment Research Group at King’s College London, commissioned by the British Lung Foundation, provided some unsettling statistics on the costs to both Liverpool’s economy and the health of its population, associated with long term exposure to the city’s high levels of airborne anthropogenic particular matter (PM2.5) and nitrogen dioxide. http://www.erg.kcl.ac.uk/Research/docs/LiverpoolCityRegion_Report.docx

As Liverpool City Council continues to finalisethe content of a Clean Air Plan to address regional air quality, Hexsor Scientific is one of a number of local companies exploring ways to help the city breathe a little easier.

GBIP AND HEXSOR EXPLORE SUSTAINABLE SOLUTIONS IN INDIA’S SMART CITIES

“Intense, exciting and eye-opening” was the reaction, after Hexsor’s return to the UK following a whirlwind five-day programme of site visits, B2B networking events and presentations in the Indian cities of Indore and Bangalore.

The first part of the programme was spent in Indore, a city ranked India’s cleanest since 2017 based on recent advances in its sewerage infrastructure, which nevertheless faces a number of urban public health and environmental challenges. Here, delegates were able to showcase their companies, before meeting with representatives from organisations including the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI), the Indian Institute of Management Indore (IIM-Indore) and Indore’s Smart City Development Limited, who outlined their objectives and the emergent opportunities accompanying the city’s Smart transformation.

A short flight south, and the second part of the programme picked up in the country’s major innovation and technology hub, Bangalore: a state capital with a population of over 10 million facing its own set of challenges, particularly around air quality, water supply, wastewater and sewerage. Here too, GBIP delegates were able to connect with representatives from the city’s own Smart City initiatives and discuss potential future collaborations.

“Hexsor’s technologies, outlook and enthusiasm were very well-received”, reported company founder, Dr Jeyan Sreekumar, “and a number of our new relationships offer exciting prospects for future development”

GLOBAL BUSINESS INNOVATION

Government support creates new overseas market opportunities for Hexsor Scientific

A place on the government’s prestigious Global Business Innovation Programme (GBIP) is set to drive Hexsor’s growth into new Indian markets during 2020.

Having overcome competition from a deep pool of UK business, Hexsor representatives will form part of a GBIP delegation to the Indian cities of Indore and Bangalore during February. Supported by experts from Innovate UK, the programme has been created to deliver a deep understanding of current opportunities within the Indian market and to facilitate knowledge transfer, innovation, investment and international collaboration between high-potential businesses, research institutions and innovation hubs in India and the UK, in line with the strategic commitments of the UK government’s Industrial Strategy.

A particular focus of the delegation will be emergent opportunities associated with the Government of India’s Smart Cities Mission. This massive urban renewal project aims to future-proof India’s urban infrastructure and improve the health and well-being of its citizens through the deployment of new systems and technologies designed to tackle air and water pollution; a challenge which Hexsor Scientific, with its range of innovative sensor solutions, is well-equipped to meet.

ALGAE-600P COMPLETES SUCCESSFUL FIELD TRIALS IN AFRICA

São Vicente Island in the Republic of Cape Verde was the location for successful field trials of Hexsor’s chlorophyll analyser, the Algae-600P, during May. In partnership with UK-based Q-Technologies and researchers from the University of Cape Verde, the Algae-600P was deployed at six locations on the island (Calhau, Baía das Gatas, Salamansa, Mindelo Marina, Gale and São Pedro) for the analysis of toxic marine algae. Cyanobacterial Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs) can be deadly to marine life and pose a significant risk to human health. With larger and more toxic blooms more common than ever before, and the costs associated with tackling large blooms rising rapidly, the Algae 600P has proven itself an innovative, robust and affordable solution to the difficulties of real-time biomass monitoring for HAB prediction and prevention.
